Each maker has their own rules and whatnot when washing or keeping up with your fursuits. So please use our comprehensive guide below for that issue!
Washing your fursuit
Heads and Feet:
These parts are more dense and harder to clean out. So, we encourage you to be very gentle with these steps.
Fill a bucket in the tub with laundry detergent, and another with clean water.
Take a scrubbing towel and whipe both the inside and the outside of your head and feetpaws.
You can either make it semi-damp, or very lightly damp.
Always scrub in a gentle circular motion! This is to get all sides of your fursuit.
Try to steer clear of the eyes as much as possible. Even though they are sealed, it is a general good rule to keep away from those.
Then, take another scrubbing towel and use the clean water to rinse the suit. This towel you can make semi-damp, as it needs to get the soap out as much as possible.
After these steps are done, lay your head and feet down on towels someplace with no humidity. DO NOT HANG: This will cause the fibers to lengthen and break over time.
At this stage, you can brush them gently and flip them in 6 or so hours (or when the suit is dry on that upper half).
All Other Items:
All other parts, such as tails and hands, can be washed regularly.
For your bodies, you can take out the padding easilly before continuing. The padding pillows in Digitigrade Suits are washable much like regular pillows.
Fill your bath tub with water and add your desired detergent.
Add Fabric Softener if your suit is a little matted up. This helps it de-tangle.
Place your items into the bathtub and scrub away!
Don't scrub too hard though, try to go in gentle circular motions.
If a spot is particularly dirty, you can push down to release some of the dirt and grime as well.
We recommend washing your tail last if it is a floor dragger. This will make the water turn gross colors after a while, so it should be last.
Squeeze out as much of the water as possible and place all furry items into a pillowcase. This will help the fur to not be scrubbed up against in the washing machine.
Place items into your washing machine and put it on "Rinse and Spin". This will get most of the water out of your fursuit parts and help rinse the detergent off.
Then, we recommend laying your pieces out onto towels. DO NOT HANG: This causes the fibers to streach over time.
Of course, brush them out gently and flip them over in about 4 hours or so.
Keeping fresh after a wash
Once your suit is dry, you are more than welcome to put dryer sheets in the feet, body, and head! That way it keeps them from being musty smelling.
Investing in a fursuit spray is also a really grand idea. This will help you freshen up at conventions. We recommend PlushyDogTreats and GlowingKiwiAussie as really great brands!
If you're not wanting to 100% wash after most cons, we do suggest using a Bissel Spot Cleaner/Green Machine for your fursuit. PLEASE DON'T GET THE HEATED ONE, IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR SUIT!! For more information on this one, check out this video!
